Fatigue Management on Construction Sites: WA Employer Guide

Fatigue Management on Construction Sites

Fatigue is a leading contributor to construction accidents. Tired workers make mistakes, react slowly, and take risks. Under WHS Act 2020, managing fatigue is an employer obligation.

Risk Factors

Extended shifts (10-12+ hours). Early starts (before 6am). Night shift work. Insufficient break time. Long commutes to remote sites. Consecutive working days without rest.

Management Strategies

Limit shifts to 10-12 hours maximum. Ensure minimum 10 hours between shifts. Provide adequate breaks. Monitor for fatigue signs (yawning, slow reactions, errors). Rotate workers on high-risk tasks. Limit consecutive working days.
