FIFO Mental Health: Coping Strategies for Fly-In Fly-Out Workers

FIFO Mental Health

FIFO work pays well but takes a mental health toll. Isolation, relationship strain, roster fatigue, and camp monotony affect thousands of WA workers. Here is how to manage it.

Coping Strategies

Maintain routines on site (exercise, sleep schedule, hobbies). Stay connected with family through scheduled video calls. Set a financial goal with an end date — FIFO works best as a means to an end. Build friendships in camp. Limit alcohol. Use R&R time intentionally, not just recovery.

When to Get Help

Persistent low mood lasting more than 2 weeks. Sleep problems. Loss of interest in things you normally enjoy. Increased alcohol or substance use. Withdrawing from family and friends.
