Labourer vs Trade Assistant
They sound similar but they are different roles with different pay, responsibilities, and career paths.
Labourer
General site duties — cleaning, material handling, digging, demolition. Works across the whole site. $30-$38/hr. No specific trade knowledge required.
Trade Assistant
Works directly alongside a qualified tradesperson learning their specific trade. Handles materials, tools, and preparation for that trade. $32-$42/hr. Often leads to an apprenticeship in that trade.
Which Is Better?
Labourer: better if you want variety and aren’t sure which trade to pursue. Trade assistant: better if you want to test a specific trade before committing to a 3-4 year apprenticeship.
